Heel Callus: Walk the Texas State Fair Pain Free

One of the greatest sources of entertainment in Texas is the State Fair of Texas, running for 24 days this year from September 27th to October 20th, 2013. It has been held yearly at Dallas’ Fair Park since 1886 and was the place where the corny dog made its first appearance!

As you take in the sights, sounds and tastes of this incredible event, something else that could make an appearance is foot pain. Walking all day long in the wrong shoes, especially if you have an underlying foot problem, could lead to many types of injuries including shin splints, blisters, arch pain and heel calluses.

What is a heel callus?

It is essentially a patch of dry skin, but there is more about this problem that you need to know. When your foot, especially the heel, is exposed to frequent rubbing or pressure, it builds up a raised layer of hard skin as a form of protection. Wearing a tight shoe that squeezes your foot, or a loose one that causes your foot to rub against the shoe, can both lead to the formation of a callus. Wearing shoes with a thin sole or sandals without socks can also put you at risk.

If you generally wear well-fitting shoes but still notice calluses forming, it may be due to structural problem in your feet. Sometimes certain bones in the foot are longer or lower than others and strike the ground with more force that they can handle. A callus can form under these bones as a response to the extra impact. A large callus on the heel can make walking and wearing shoes painful. Dry patches of skin are also prone to cracking and infection.

If you are going to head to the fair this fall, start the day off right and stop a callus from forming with a good pair of shoes. If it’s too late and a day of fun has left you limping, please call Dr. Jeff Bowman for help. Our office has the right treatments to get rid of your heel problem and get you back walking without pain. Call Houston Foot Specialists in Houston, TX at (713) 467-8886 to make an appointment today.

Are Shoes with Flat Soles Better for Your Child’s Feet?

There is one word that many associate with fall – festivals! For kids and adults alike, a fall event such as the Humble Fall Festival in Humble, TX is a time to enjoy all that the season has to offer. On Saturday, October 26th, the whole family can enjoy music performances, carnival games, trunk-or-treat and costume contests. Whether you are taking your children to enjoy the day at a festival or fitting them for school, equip them properly with the right pair of shoes.

There is a vast array of options to choose from in the children’s shoe department, but not all are appropriate, particularly ones with heels. Children’s feet are still growing, and an ill-fitting pair of shoes will not provide the necessary comfort and support. When it comes to dress shoes, companies are providing styles for little ladies that are comparable to adult high heels. As cute as this may be, this type of shoe can be damaging on young feet as pointed toe boxes squish toes and higher heels cause the balls of feet to bear all the weight in the foot.

There are also studies that report on the negative impact that running shoes with thick heels have on children’s feet. Highly cushioned running shoes with thick heels can make it difficult for a child to learn how to run with the front of their foot. Landing with the heel causes more impact on the foot. These studies advise parents to provide children with a pair of flexible, flat shoes that will help them learn how to run in a more natural manner.

Between your children’s preferences and the price tag, finding the right pair of shoes can be tricky. A little investment and time will go a long way in protecting their growing feet. If your child is complaining of any type of foot pain or is sitting out of activities because of a foot problem, please call Dr. Jeff Bowman for help. Their foot health is important and proper care now sets the stage for the future. Make an appointment with Houston Foot Specialists in Houston, TX by calling (713) 467-8886.

Running with Heel Spurs

The Run or Dye 5K, taking place on September 14th in Houston, TX is calling all runners to come out and have some colorful fun! Get blasted with safe colored dye and pass the finish line in Technicolor fashion. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or just looking for a reason to get out and have fun, this race is for you.

The joy of a once-in-a-lifetime experience like this can be seriously dampened with a foot condition such as heel spurs. If you run regularly and have been experiencing sharp pains in your feet when you get up in the morning, dull pain during the day and discomfort while walking or running, a heel spur could be the cause.

A heel spur is actually a calcium deposit that forms on the heel usually stemming from a primary condition such as plantar fasciitis, an injury where tendons in the foot become inflamed. Running puts tons of stress on your feet and while a condition such as spurs can be painful, it can be managed to keep you on the road.

If you are gearing up for a race such as The Run or Dye Houston, take some rest from training beforehand. Icing for ten to fifteen minutes a few times a day will help to ease swelling. Before you get back on your feet, assess your footwear. If they do not have the support, shock absorption and cushioning your feet need, especially in the heel area, shell out the dollars for a new pair. The brands New Balance and Brooks offer some great running shoe options for people with spurs.

One of the best things you can do as a runner is to have a podiatrist such as Dr. Jeff Bowman be a part of your team. He can diagnose any pain, provide the right treatment and offer valuable advice to keep you healthy and able to run! Call Houston Foot Specialists in Houston, TX today at (713) 467-8886 with any questions or if you need treatment.

The Best Shoes to Wear if You Have Knee Problems

Tennis great Rafael Nadal of Spain spent seven months sidelined from the professional tennis tour because of knee problems. The knee endures an extreme amount of stress and impact in the world of sports, but the same is even true during simple daily tasks for the average person.

Knee pain can arise for several different reasons. An injury, arthritis, poor footwear and a faulty foot structure can all be to blame. Whatever the cause, pain can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. One of the best places to start is looking at the shoes you are wearing. Your feet are your foundation and if they are not supported and taken care of, the knee can take the brunt of the neglect.

At Houston Foot Specialists, we encourage patients with knee problems to invest in good shoes. This is not a time to be a penny pincher. Cheap materials and little support will only make your problems worse. You want to look for a pair of shoes that are well cushioned with good shock absorption and arch support.  Often, Custom Orthotics to correct foot structure is recommended. These features will limit the impact your knee will have to endure each time your foot strikes the ground.

Knowing your foot type should also guide your shoe choice. A faulty foot structure such as having flat feet or high arches alters the way your foot meets the ground. This abnormality can impact your knees, hips and lower back. A reputable sports store will be able to offer proper suggestions to accommodate your foot type. The experts at Livestrong.com have identified the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10, Saucony Progrid Omni 9 and the Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 as shoes suitable for knee pain sufferers.

If you can’t find a shoe that seems to help or are concerned that a foot problem is to blame for your knee problems, we can help! Don’t hesitate to contact our office in Houston, TX at (713) 467-8886 with any questions or to make an appointment.

Best Shoes for People with Flat Feet

How often do you think about your foot type when shopping for shoes? If you have painful flat feet and haven’t been choosing wisely, your shoes could be the cause! Flat feet are characteristic of an arch that has flattened. If you aren’t sure, place a wet foot on a light brown piece of paper. If the footprint has a flat oblong shape, you most likely have a flat foot.

Our Houston, TX staff constantly stresses the importance of good footwear to our patients. If you have flat feet, your foot structure needs a shoe that will support it properly to avoid stress on the foot and possible injury. People with flat feet tend to have a problem with over-pronation, which is when the ankle rolls inward while standing, walking or running. When you go out shopping for your next pair of shoes, take the time to go to a reputable shoe store with employees who know which shoes would be best suited for flat feet. An anti-pronation shoe is optimal as it is designed in such a way to limit the foot from over-pronation.

Remember that shoes for a flat foot should be well cushioned and have a straight sole rather than a curved one. If the sole is too curved, it can put a lot of pressure on the foot. Look for a shoe with solid support – if you can bend it in the middle, leave it on the shelf. This is especially important if you want to use the shoe for athletics.

Lastly, many patients with flat feet experience great benefits by using custom orthotics to support and stabilize their feet. Choose shoes with removable insoles to accommodate for orthotics if necessary.

If having flat feet is causing pain and making it difficult to stay involved in your favorite activities or to find shoes that feel great, Dr. Jeff Bowman can help! Please contact Houston Foot Specialists and make an appointment today. Don’t let one more day go by being plagued with foot pain, call (713) 467-8886.

Best Shoes for High Arches

Do you have high arches and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes?
Having a certain foot structure, which is often inherited, can create some problems once in awhile. One of the ways feet can be different is by the type of arch that is present. If you wet your foot and step on a light brown piece of paper, check the footprint. If just your toes and heel show up, then you have a high arch. If it looks more like a pancake, you have a flat foot.

Foot specialist, Dr. Jeff Bowman, often finds that patients with high arches who are complaining of foot pain just need a simple shoe modification. A standard shoe off the shelf may not suffice in providing the support and cushioning your foot needs. This is especially true if you are active and heavily involved in running or other sports.  Custom Orthotics may be the simple answer for you.

Having a high arch often causes the foot to roll inward with each step (pronation). If you have high arches, check the wear on your shoes. You may notice that the tread on the outside of the shoe is more worn. A cross trainer type of shoe is a great choice for this foot type. This shoe is designed for someone engaged in all types of activities from chasing your kids, to running errands, taking a hike, playing tennis or participating in an aerobics class. They provide extra stability, padding for arches and ankle support.

If you can’t find a comfortable pair of shoes that allow you to live life to the fullest and without foot pain, allow us to help you. Dr. Bowman can evaluate your feet and provide excellent footwear tips, even for high heels. Don’t let a high arch get you down, call Houston Foot Specialists today at (713) 467-8886 to make an appointment.

Find the Best Walking Shoes for You

When it comes to shoes, the latest in modern technology and materials combined with current fashion trends leads to an overwhelming number of choices. If you are on the lookout for a new pair of shoes, the vast array of options can be exciting but also make it daunting to find the perfect pair.

If you love to walk, choose comfort over fashion!

Face it. Your feet are what get you from point A to point B and if you are a walker, they need to be protected. Houston, TX foot specialist, Dr. Jeff Bowman, has seen all too often the perils that feet succumb to when neglected. When looking for the right pair of walking shoes, keep the following in mind:
  • How they fit matters more than anything else. You might be tempted to compromise because of style or cost but your feet will end up paying the price.
  • Shop at a reputable store with employees who know how to fit shoes and go in the afternoon when your feet have had the chance to swell. Also, bring the socks you would wear to ensure a good fit.
  • For a walking shoe, look for comfort, stability and cushioning. Different brands fit feet in different ways. Know your foot type and what kind of protection your feet need. A high arched foot will need specific support different than a flat foot. If you are heavier or your feet tend to overpronate, you will want a walking shoe with motion control to stabilize your feet while you walk.
  • Choose a shoe based on the climate as well. Breathability is needed in hot weather when feet tend to sweat and feet need to be more protected in cold or wet weather.
  • Trust the experts that review shoes. The people at Livestrong and APMA provide reviews on the top walking shoes – research what you need before you shop.
If you are having trouble finding comfortable shoes or have foot pain while walking, please contact Houston Foot Specialists for diagnosis and treatment. Make an appointment today by calling (713) 467-8886 or directly online at Houston Foot Specialist.

Baseball Cleats

For many adults and kids alike, baseball is in full swing. Whether you are playing in a professional game, recreationally or have a child in little league, protecting feet and ankles with the proper footwear is essential.

Dr. Jeff Bowman, foot specialist in Houston, TX, has all too often seen the damage done to feet from wearing poor shoes. This is especially true with athletes. With the sliding, running and rapid starts and stops involved in baseball, feet and ankles can take a beating. Some of the more common injuries Dr. Bowman treats with his baseball enthusiasts include: ankle sprains, fractures, shin splints, plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. While tennis shoes may suffice for a game of catch, baseball typically requires cleats as the necessary footwear.

When you are looking for a good pair of cleats, keep comfort in mind. You may be tempted to find a cheap pair online, instead go to a store and try shoes on. You want to find cleats that have a wide toe box with room for your toes to wiggle. The heel cup should also be snug so your feet do not slide in and out of the shoe. There are also variations in how high cleats come up the ankle. A low top will be lightweight but may not offer your ankle much support. If you have had sprains or injury in the past, choose a cleat with a high top for maximum support. Some leagues also have rules on the type of cleat allowed so be sure to check which style you need.

If you are new to wearing cleats, it will be helpful to practice in them to adjust to how they feel during play. The cleats can get stuck and result in foot and knee injuries. Practicing will help you go full speed during the game and avoid potential injuries.

If you have an old or new sports injury or a concern about how your foot health may be affecting your game, please contact our podiatric office for help. Make an appointment by calling (713) 467-8886 or visit us online www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Shoes For Every Sport-Shoes for Kayaking

Kayaking actually began with the Inuit tribes of Arctic North America. They used a kayak made out of driftwood or animal skins that were stretched over whalebones. Whale fat was also used to make the vessels waterproof. Seal bladders were also filled with air and tucked into the front and back areas to provide buoyancy. These are a far cry from the ones sold in stores today!

The Olympic games now feature 10 different kayak events and the activity is fun for all ages. Whether you are going to take up kayaking as a leisure family activity or to experience white water competition, the right shoes are a must.

What kind of shoes should I wear kayaking?

Just like any other sport that requires specific shoes, kayaking is no different. You need to protect your feet, even if you are going down a lazy river on a warm summer day. If your kayak tips and you need to get out, your feet need to be protected against rocks or objects on the bottom of the water or the shore. The size of the kayak does not often allow enough room for bulky shoes and it is important for your feet to stay warm and dry.

To fit all of these criteria, look for a water shoe or bootie. They are typically made from the same material as wet suits. They typically aren’t completely waterproof but are designed to drain water so it doesn’t puddle and stay on your skin. They will help keep your feet warm as they protect them from any wind or cold temperatures. They are smaller to fit inside the kayak and are not going to fall off in the case that you tip or need to get out into the water.

Kayaking is a great activity but a foot injury will cut your trip short and have you paddling to shore. Keep your feet safe and come and see Houston, TX foot specialist Dr. Jeff Bowman, with any foot concerns. Make an appointment by calling our podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 or visit www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

What Kind of Shoes to Wear While Lifting Weights

A common pitfall for many athletes is thinking that any regular shoe will suffice no matter what they are doing. There are many activities where a simple running shoe can work, but most sports require a specific shoe to not only help you play better but also to keep your feet and ankles safe.

Do I really need a specific shoe for weight lifting?

The answer is yes! You cannot overlook the value of the right kind of shoes if you want to get into weight lifting. Dr. Jeff Bowman, foot and ankle specialist in Houston, TX too often sees the results of ignoring this rule. Blisters, fractures, sprains, strains, ingrown toenails and Achilles tendon injuries are just a few things that have athletes hobbling into our podiatric office.

Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for shoes to wear while weight lifting:
  • A good weight lifting shoe is all about providing safety and stability with weight transfer
  • Avoid shoes with too much cushioning
  • Look for a shoe that is heavier but still allows for freedom of movement
  • An adjustable strap will help keep your feet stable in the shoe
  • Look for a tough rubber sole and a heel height of about an inch to help promote balance and prevent slipping
  • The shoe needs to fit relatively snug for good stability
  • High-top lacing is not advised as it can compromise the movement of your ankles
Does this all seem a bit overwhelming? We can step in and help. No matter what sport you are involved in, let us be a part of your team. We can treat any foot pain and help you find the right shoes for your feet. Make an appointment today by calling our podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 or visit www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Footwear for Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a growing sport among athletes today. You may not be too familiar with this sport, but there is more history with it then you might be aware of! Lacrosse is considered by many to be America’s first sport. It started with the North American Indian, was taken up by the French to finally be adapted and made popular by Canadians. It is a combination of hockey, soccer and basketball and is one of the fastest growing sports in the US today.

Foot specialist Dr. Jeff Bowman, treats athletes on a regular basis and knows the impact sports can have on feet and ankles. Lacrosse is a fast paced sport that requires agility and coordination. As with most sports, to play efficiently and keep feet safe, the right footwear is a must.

What kind of shoes do I need for Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is typically played on a grassy field that can wet and muddy. You are going to want to look for cleats that are specific to Lacrosse. They are a mix between soccer and baseball cleats. Look for a cleat with a leather upper and rubber outsole to give you the traction you will need. Most lacrosse leagues don’t allow metal cleats so choose ones made of plastic. You also want your cleat to be lightweight, comfortable and able to fit custom orthotics which will help prevent injury. The sporting goods store in the mall down the street most likely will not provide what you need for Lacrosse. Search for a specialty store that will provide appropriate choices.

Nothing will be more frustrating as you are deep in a match then being sidelined with foot pain. If foot pain is hindering your Lacrosse game or an injury has you sitting out, please call us for help. Make an appointment at our Houston, TX podiatric office today. You can call (713) 467-8886 or visit www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Why You Should Steer Away From Flip Flops

Spring is here but don’t jump into your flip-flops just yet! We know they are cheap, quick to get on and one of the most popular hot weather shoes out there. Just read on for a bit of flip-flop information you may not be aware of.

How can flip-flops hurt my feet?

Dr. Jeff Bowman, foot specialist in Houston, TX knows all too well how poor, unsupportive shoes can affect feet. He treats patients regularly who come in hobbling with pain and problems from bad shoes. Flip-flops are one type of shoe that can really do a number on your feet. Most flip-flops can literally be folded in half. They are flimsy and a thin layer of rubber is not going to cut it. Some of the common problems our podiatric office sees as a result of wearing flip flops include:
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Fractures
If you know that you are going to spend the day shopping, walking or playing tourist around a vacation spot, keep your flip flops packed. Choose a good supportive shoe instead that will keep your feet comfortable and supported. The last thing you want at the end of the day is a foot full of pain. Look for a sandal that has good arch support, straps that will keep the shoe snugly in place, a firm sole and a lower heel that won’t put added stress on your feet.

You do want to protect the bottom of your feet. It is generally ok to slip on a pair of flip-flops to go from the pool to the beach or while in a public pool or shower area. Other than that, put your feet first by putting them in a proper pair of shoes. If you have foot pain from wearing a flimsy pair of flip-flops, contact us today for treatment. Call our podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 or visit www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Have a Bunion? What Shoes Should I Wear?

Do you have a large bump on the side of your toe?

If so, you most likely have a bunion. Bunions are a very common foot deformity where the big toe leans over towards the other toes. Foot specialist Dr. Jeff Bowman treats patients with bunions on a daily basis at his practice in Houston, TX.  Genetics play a big role in whether you will develop bunions but your footwear choice plays an equal or even larger role.

With a bunion deformity, a bump protrudes out the side of your foot due to the big toe leaning over. This bony bump can make it difficult to find shoes and wearing the wrong shoes can aggravate a bunion and cause it to become even worse. To prevent or slow down the progression of a bunion or relieve bunion pain, investing in well-fitting shoes is essential.

If I have a bunion, what shoes should I wear?
  • Avoid shoes that have narrow, pointy shoes.
  • Look for shoes with a wide and deep toe box
  • Buy shoes made of material that has some give and stretch
  • Choose shoes that have a removable insole in the case that you wear or may need to wear orthotics which will help slow the progression of the deformity
  • Avoid shoes that have stitching or extra material at the toes as it could rub against and irritate your bunion
  • Do not choose shoes based on the hopes that they will eventually stretch out and be comfortable – they should feel great in the store!
  • Invest in shoes labeled for comfort that can be worn for long periods of time and are designed to protect and support feet that have specific conditions
  • Shop for shoes at the end of the day when the feet tend to be more swollen, this will ensure a proper fit
Dr. Bowman can provide expert advice and treatment if you are struggling with a bunion problem. There are many treatment options to help alleviate your symptoms and allow you to live life pain-free. Make an appointment today by calling our podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 or visit www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Toe Implants & Hammertoe Surgery

Do your toes look a little less than desirable? Are they crooked and bent? If they look like little hammers that make an upside down “V” then you have hammertoes.

Dr. Jeff Bowman, foot and ankle specialist in Houston, TX treats hammertoes on a very regular basis. It is a common toe condition that usually results from a muscle imbalance in your foot. The tendons and ligaments can become abnormally tight and bend the toe beyond its normal position. Genetics, Flat Feet, arthritis and even poorly fitting shoes can all cause hammertoes to develop and they can be either flexible or rigid.

Severe arthritis or waiting too long to seek treatment can cause hammertoes to become rigid. Unfortunately, when hammertoes get to the point where they are rigid, the treatment options become focused on surgical methods.

What is involved with hammertoe surgery and toe implants?

Surgery for hammertoes is not as scary as it may sound. It can be done on an outpatient basis and usually takes about 15 minutes. Local anesthetic is used, sometimes combined with sedation. Many of Dr. Bowman’s patients are able to walk right after using a surgical shoe and have minimal pain post surgery.

In some cases, hammertoes can return and when this happens, Dr. Bowman may encourage you to have toe implant surgery. This corrective surgery involves a quarter size implant called a Smart Toe that helps to keep the toe straight. This surgery helps many patients get back to being mobile very quickly.

If you have painful, rigid hammertoes and would like to discuss treatment options, contact Dr. Bowman today for more information. Call our podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 or visit us at www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

The Foot Preparing for a CrossFit Workout

CrossFit is a strengthening and conditioning program. It is a very popular fitness trend that is also being implemented in police academies and military operations. It is an intense exercise program that involves jumps, lifts and strength training structured in a way that you do a certain number of repetitions in a specific time frame.

How can I best prepare for a CrossFit workout?

Dr. Jeff Bowman, foot specialist in Houston, TX encourages all of his patients to have a thorough evaluation before stepping up their exercise routine. You may not be aware of underlying conditions or problems that could lead to future injury. If you are interested in CrossFit, start with a visit to our podiatric office to ensure your feet and ankles in particular are ready to handle it. Other important tips include:
  • Take a good look at each exercise you will be asked to do. If you have never done the movements described, learn how to perform them properly. Exercising with the right technique will greatly decrease your risk of injury.
  • Work your way up. Start small, doing the amount of repetitions that your fitness level can handle. The squats, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting and explosive movements take a lot of strength and stability. It will be important to take the time to develop the flexibility and skill needed for the required movements.
  • Wear a cross training type shoe.  The shoe should be stiff at the heel and a non slip sole.
CrossFit will help you get stronger and healthier but you aren’t going to get anywhere if you are injured. The goal should be to do what you can at the level you are at. If pain or injury occurs at any point of your training, seek treatment right away before it becomes more serious. Make an appointment at our podiatric office by calling (713) 467-8886 or visit www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Why do Feet Swell After Exercise?

It can be very frustrating after putting in the effort to stay healthy and exercise only to deal with swollen feet. This condition is known as peripheral edema and while it may not be painful, it can be uncomfortable and make it difficult for shoes to fit properly.

There are several factors that can cause feet to swell. Doing too much too soon is a common cause for swelling. If you are trying to make a valiant effort after a long period of sedentary living, you are at risk for overuse and developing swelling and cramps. Impacting your sciatic nerve while exercising by twisting the wrong way or lifting weights incorrectly can cause feet to swell as well. Other causes for swollen feet include:
  • Allergies
  • Certain medications
  • Exercising in high temperatures
  • A diet high in salt
  • Hormonal changes
  • High blood pressure
  • Injury
  • Pregnancy
Making sure that you warm up and stretch properly before and after workouts may help reduce the risk of swelling.  Compression socks can help prevent swelling.  If you head home after a workout, elevate feet above your heart to reduce the chance of swelling. Prevent swollen feet during exercise by eating foods high in iron, antioxidants and Vitamin B. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol can help as well.

Swollen feet can be a result of a more serious underlying condition. If home treatments are not helping, it is important to visit Dr. Jeff Bowman of Houston Foot Specialists for a thorough diagnosis. Contact our Houston, TX podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 to make an appointment or visit us at www.houstonfootspecialists.com.
