Anytime you have an abnormal growth or an area on your skin that is different in appearance, it is generally considered to be a lesion. Some lesions are present at birth such as moles and birthmarks while others develop over time. These would include acne, warts, allergies abrasions and sunburns.

When do I need to be concerned?

Most of the time spots on the skin are harmless but they can turn into something that needs serious attention. Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, is a result of overexposure to ultraviolet light. Lesions on your skin are the warning signs that this dangerous cancer may be developing or has developed and needs immediate treatment. A common site for malignant melanoma is on legs and feet. It causes 75% of deaths related to skin cancer mostly due to the fact that it is often not discovered until it has progressed to a dangerous state.

You can avoid this situation by monitoring any spots or lesions on your skin, especially on your feet and legs. A good place to start is the ABCD’s of melanoma: A-Asymmetry, B-Borders that are irregular, C-Color that is inconsistent, and D-Diameter bigger than 5 or 6 mm. If you notice any of these specific changes with even the smallest spot, it is time take action and get it checked out. Early detection, accurate diagnosis and quick treatment will help avoid a potential life-threatening situation.

If after reading these warning signs you know of a lesion on your leg or foot that you should have looked at, please call Dr. Jeff Bowman. Beer and Swollen Feet: Is There a Connection?

Swollen feet are a common problem seen by foot specialist, Dr. Jeff Bowman, at his Houston, TX podiatric office. It can occur after standing for too long, during pregnancy, from working in a hot environment and with certain medical conditions. Alcohol is another common cause but may be one not many are aware of. If you are experiencing swollen feet (edema) and are unsure of the cause, it is worth taking a look at your alcohol intake.

Drinking a beer is typically not something to be concerned about but when there is excessive use, your liver can become damaged which can result in swelling. Cirrhosis is a chronic and serious condition that can develop with alcohol use. Your liver cells can harden and die which results in your liver shrinking and not able to function properly. When this happens, edema or swelling of legs, ankles and feet is a common sign.

Another reason you may experience swelling is if you have an allergic reaction to what you are drinking. Some people can have an allergy to alcohol or the yeast that the beer is made from. Alcohol in itself causes your blood vessels to dilate. Because of this, arteries in your legs and legs can be affected by excessive swelling, which may also account for any swelling that you may experience during or after drinking beer.   Actually, any alcoholic beverage can cause swelling.

Keep an eye on your symptoms. If you are experiencing swelling that is persistent, painful and/or consistent after drinking alcohol, it is important to consult with a professional. It could be a sign of liver damage or an underlying problem that you are not aware of.  If you are diabetic, you should consult your doctor before drinking any alcohol.

Call our podiatric office and make an appointment with Dr. Bowman to have any swelling in your feet looked at. You can contact us at (713) 467-8886 or visit us online www.houstonfootspecialists.com.

Why do Feet Swell After Exercise?

It can be very frustrating after putting in the effort to stay healthy and exercise only to deal with swollen feet. This condition is known as peripheral edema and while it may not be painful, it can be uncomfortable and make it difficult for shoes to fit properly.

There are several factors that can cause feet to swell. Doing too much too soon is a common cause for swelling. If you are trying to make a valiant effort after a long period of sedentary living, you are at risk for overuse and developing swelling and cramps. Impacting your sciatic nerve while exercising by twisting the wrong way or lifting weights incorrectly can cause feet to swell as well. Other causes for swollen feet include:
  • Allergies
  • Certain medications
  • Exercising in high temperatures
  • A diet high in salt
  • Hormonal changes
  • High blood pressure
  • Injury
  • Pregnancy
Making sure that you warm up and stretch properly before and after workouts may help reduce the risk of swelling.  Compression socks can help prevent swelling.  If you head home after a workout, elevate feet above your heart to reduce the chance of swelling. Prevent swollen feet during exercise by eating foods high in iron, antioxidants and Vitamin B. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol can help as well.

Swollen feet can be a result of a more serious underlying condition. If home treatments are not helping, it is important to visit Dr. Jeff Bowman of Houston Foot Specialists for a thorough diagnosis. Contact our Houston, TX podiatric office at (713) 467-8886 to make an appointment or visit us at www.houstonfootspecialists.com.
